Dylan parked at the country club the following afternoon. The three of them exited the car, and he proffered both elbows. “Well, ladies. Shall we?”

They spotted Sam, Brian, and Angela on the stairs, greeting guests. Brian was decked in a loose-fitted teal suit with a collarless black shirt underneath. Angela, his date, waved at Monica. Her bangles clinked as she teetered on bright blue heels in her silver sequined dress. They looked like they belonged at a disco, not a stuffy old country club. Eleanor had to admit they were the picture of hip.

Sam sported dark jeans and a blue dress shirt with a tan linen blazer. Eleanor glanced down at her Grecian dress and lace-up sandals. She smoothed her braid that began at her temple and snaked down her back. It’s not a date… but, damn, he looks good. Blane times ten.

Even better was the glint in his eyes when they locked onto her. Eleanor’s heart fluttered like it always did, but this time everything was different. She slipped her arm off Dylan’s and made straight for Sam. No one paid them any mind. By that point in the summer, the two of them gravitated to each other habitually.

“I didn’t know sequins were an option,” she whispered with a nod toward Angela as they followed the group inside.

“This is 1986. Sequins are always an option, aren’t they?”

“Mm-hmm. So, why’d you leave yours at home, Boy George?”

Her pulse hummed in her veins. Eleanor knew her tone held the same kind of energy she’d first walked into Mac’s with—flirty and playful. Her cheekiness was usually more fraternal with the group around. With them, it was a silly comment that made everyone laugh. This was different.

This was for him.

He stepped closer and whispered, “This jacket is reversible. I’m waiting for the right moment to break out the sparkles. I’m thinking it’ll be when things start to get crazy once my Uncle Barry has drunk enough of the punch.”

Her hand flew to her mouth to cover a laugh. “I assume you’re expecting us to launch into a Saturday Night Fever-style dance at that moment?”

“Obviously.” Sam chuckled and shook his head. “No, really, I almost wore a suit. But I looked like a waiter, or at best, a Beatle circa 1964.”

Elle skimmed her hand over his sleeve. “I’m sure you looked great. But this seems more you.”

They stepped to the side once they entered the ballroom. Sam swept his eyes over her twice. “Well, good. Because this dress you’re wearing is very you, too.”

She smirked, but she could feel her heartbeat from her throat to her fingertips. “Is that code for you like it?”

Sam glanced around, then shrugged like he didn’t give a damn and slid an arm around her waist. He pulled her close to whisper in her ear. “It’s code for you’re absolutely beautiful.”

His lips grazed her ear before he stepped back and looked into her bright eyes. “Now, let’s get some punch and tell some lies about who you are and how we met.
